The Victorian historian <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgwaterheritage.com\/wp\/scholars-writers\/historians-of-bridgwater\/sydney-gardnor-jarman\/\">Sydney Gardnor Jarman<\/a> (1856-1949) suggested that there were two sections of castle wall running along King Square in chapter six of his <a href=\"https:\/\/bridgwaterheritage.com\/wp\/scholars-writers\/historians-of-bridgwater\/sydney-gardnor-jarman\/jarman-history-of-bridgwater-chapter-6\/\">History of Bridgwater<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8230;The last wall which stood was on the spot now occupied by the large house on the north-east corner of the Square, an it ultimately had to be removed as being dangerous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"607\" src=\"https:\/\/bridgwaterheritage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/King-Square-1024x607.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9350\" srcset=\"https:\/\/bridgwaterheritage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/King-Square-1024x607.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/bridgwaterheritage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/King-Square-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/bridgwaterheritage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/King-Square-768x455.jpg 768w, https:\/\/bridgwaterheritage.com\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/King-Square.jpg 1407w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">The 25&#8243; OS Map showing King Square in 1887, about the time Jarman was writing. An old spoon was the only relic which came to light. The stones taken from the ruins served to build portions of the walls of new premises, and in more than one instance parts of the ruins themselves were built in, in running up new structures&#8230;\u00a0<sup>[1]<\/sup>\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Here Jarman seems to be making reference to a report in the\u00a0<em>Somerset Archaeological Society proceedings<\/em>\u00a0of 1877, that &#8216;a portion of the roadway there fell in and a chasm was found, the opening, it was believed, of a well belonging to the castle, which was thus shown to be of very large dimensions&#8217;.\u00a0<sup>[2]<\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-css-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><sup>[1]<\/sup>&nbsp;&nbsp;Jarman, S.
