Y: Street Names of Bridgwater

Street names of Bridgwater beginning with the letter Y.

Yeo Road: Final part of the late 1960s Colley Lane Industrial: built between 1971 and 1974 (Town Guides, 1971, 1974). One of a number of roads in this estate to be named after Somerset Rivers. ‘Yeo’ means ‘forked river’ from the Brythonic language (Ekwall). Incidentally, an old field, recently built over for the Little Sydenham Estate, was ‘Blind Yeo’, meaning a dead-end offshoot of the River Parrett. Westminster Way, Regal Walk and Regents Court are among the modern street built over this field.

Y: York Buildings include the bank at the centre of this picture of about 1930.

York Buildings: A U-shaped area from Clare Street to the Cornhill and up towards King Square. Earliest mention found so far is in the Taunton Courier, and Western Advertiser  of 7 January 1824, when a Miss Wells announced the reopening of her school. Name appears on the 1888 OS maps. Does not appear on earlier maps. Unclear significance. Possibly a reference to Frederick, Duke of York, who was brother to William, Duke of Clarence, to whom the opposite Clarence Hotel was named after. The Clarence Hotel opened in 1825.

York Road: Part of the 1930s Hamp housing scheme. Road appears in the 1939 Town Guide. Several of these names were taken from royal titles, in this case the Duke of York, specifically the future George VI.
