Z: Street Names of Bridgwater

Street names of the town of Bridgwater and the surrounding district, beginning with the letter Z.

Zeta Close: Horsey. Modern. Date TBC. Appears on the 2006 Somerset County Council Aerial Survey, although probably a few decades older – perhaps 1970s or 1980s. Significance unclear: presumably refers to the last letter of the Greek alphabet: Ζ (uppercase) ζ (lowercase). Open field on the 1946 RAF photographic survey, although the adjoining house at the top of the lane ‘Coverdale’, was standing by then.

Zig-Zag Row: Chilton Street. Most likely numbers 63-79, the frontages of which form a zig-zag. This Zig Zag Row is mentioned in a Bridgwater Mercury report of 3 October 1877 in which contamination is mentioned in relation to the rhynes on the Wembdon Levels, from where Halesleigh Road now stands all the way to Chilton Street here (with thanks to Jillian Trethewey).

Z: Zig-Zag Row on Chilton Street.
