Volumes 5 and 6 of the Bridgwater Borough Archives

In this article, Tony Woolrich explores the publication of the Bridgwater Borough Archives Volumes 5 and 6 – volume 5 was completed by Robert Dunning, while volume 6 is still awaiting transcription. It is hoped that Dilks’ materials relating to volume 6 might be found, so that the final edition might be published. Below is an example of Dilks’ handwriting, which should match the transcriptions for volume 6.

Comments relating to Volumes 5 and 6

Doc 1) Mentions using TBD’s notebooks to find a MS. Does this mean they were with the MSS in the Town Hall then?

Doc 3) Says that TBD’s MSS and files were with a teacher who had left the county. This was presumably Tremlett.

Doc 4 & 7) Says that Tremlett claimed the transcripts as his own. No mention of having originated with Dilks.

Doc 13) Says the work extended to 1509, but owing to length, better to split into 2 volumes.

Docs 16 & 18) Mentions MS of Vol. 6 Also (18) that papers comprised 5 boxes one of which contained Vol 6 with 2 indices; loose-leaf notebooks; an account book; box of index cards and a box containing seals and document transcripts.
