Numbers 1 and 2 Binford Place were depicted in John Chubb’s illustrations as a single two-bay gabled property, with a full-height first story, then a second storey set into the roof. The two depictions vary in the putch of the roof, but both show a relatively small property of indeterminate age. This single property seems to be depicted on the 1810s Town Plan. Sometime in the nineteenth century the building was heightened, but also divided into two narrow properties, as shown on the 1887 OS map above. This was presumably done in the first half of the nineteenth century. Both seem to share the same roof. Occupational history is still to be established. By 1905 the Fore Street Clothing Company occupied both properties, although they were divided again by the time they were demolished.
In the 1937 Whitby Light and Lane Directory for Bridgwater, number 1 was occupied by the Fore Street Clothing Company, the Liverpool and Victoria Insurance Company, and F.C.Davidson, dentist. The ground floor was presumably the cloths shop with the insurance offices and dentists surgery on the upper floors. In the 1960 Kelly’s Directory for Bridgwater number 1 was occupied by Frederick Davidson, dentist, and number 2 was occupied by Lock and Sons Ltd outfitters.
They were demolished in 1966.
