The Squirrel of Bridgwater 1882

The Squirrel in Bridgwater Docks

The Squirrel, a Ketch of 75 tons, was built in Bridgwater in 1882 by F.J .Carver, on East Quay. She seems to have spent most of her life registered at Cardiff. Her registration number was 84671.

The West Somerset Free Press of 11 March 1882 noted: “BRIDGWATER LAUNCH – A newly-built ketch, of about 150 tons, christened by Alderman Symons, the ex-Mayor, the Squirrel, was launched on Tuesday morning from the shipbuilding yard of Mr. Carver, on the East Quay. The vessel has been built for Mr James Ware, of Cardiff, and is intended for the general coasting trade.” Mr Ware of Cardiff was probably the son of James Ware, the dockmaster of Bridgwater.

In 1890 she was owned by James Ware of Cardiff, in 1900, 1910, 1915, 1920 and1930 she was managed by a Daniel Gower of Cardiff. By 1920 she had had an auxiliary motor installed. In 1930 the registered tonnage had dropped to 51 tons. In 1940 she was managed by Mrs Phyllis L Alen of Connah’s Quay & Albert E Catherine of Connah’s Quay, Flint.

It is not clear what her final fate was.

A picture of the deck space appears in Bridgwater and the River Parrett, by Rod Fitzhugh (1993), page 47.
