The Bascule Bridge

To carry the Chilton Road over the barge lock of the docks, a double leaf bascule bridge was built in YEAR.

It worked on the same principal as the later Tower Bridge in London, but was manually operated. It was made of cast iron, but was removed for refurbishment in 1981 by Adams and Butterly of Derby and replaced by a replica in mild steel in 1983, now including electrical operation. It was later damaged by traffic and is now in operable without repair.
