Eliza of Bridgwater 1865-1949

The Eliza moored at East Quay at High Tide, probably resting on the gridiron. This picture would have been taken after 1905 and the completion of the Carnegie Library building on Salmon Parade. Here she has two masts.

The Eliza was built in Runcorn on the Mersey in 1865, she was a Trow/Dandy of 40 tons.

She was registered in Bridgwater in 1898, although by 1900 her tonnage had increased to 62, presumably some alteration had freed up space, or else there was a typo somewhere in her history. Her managing owner at that time was Herbert Baker of Bridgwater. In 1910, 1915 and 1920 her owner is listed as Bradford & Sons, her manager Tom Everleigh of Bridgwater. The captain in 1920 was J. William. In 1930 her owner was recorded as David I. Cook of Frampton-on-Severn, while the manager was William Cook of Elsie Villa, Frampton-on-Severn.

She was registered as a barge 1936 and pictures of her mastless can be seen in Rod Fitzhugh’s Bridgwater and the River Parrett (1993), p.15.

In 1940 her managing owner is listed as  Fred A. Ashmead of Netham Lock, St George, Bristol.

She was broken up 1949.
