Research page for the villages and hamlets in the district around the town of Bridgwater. Within the immediate vicinity of Bridgwater are Chilton Trinity, Wembdon, and Durleigh, each being the core of their own Parishes. More work needs to be done on the early history of the district’s parishes, as it has been speculated that they were once part of a much larger administrative unit.
Most of the hamlets, including Kidsbury, Haygrove, Hamp, Dunwear, East and West Bower and Horsey are now largely absorbed into Bridgwater, although each have distinct and interesting histories.
We hope to include other villages further out in the district as time goes on, as the scope of this site covers the old Bridgwater Rural District Council, which in turn was based on the old Poor law Union. This stretches west to Nether Stowey, north to Huntspill, south to Broomfield and east to Chilton Polden.
